B.   What is information Literacy?

1.            Association of College and Research Libraries defines as  "a set of abilities requiring individuals to recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information."

 

II.    Association of College and Research Libraries  Five Factors:

 

A.      KNOW : Determine the extent of information needed

1.           What does that mean and how do we determine this?

 

B.      ACCESS : Access the needed information effectively and efficiently 

1.           How do we identify the information, retrieve and access  it? What services, if any are required to do this?

 

C.      EVALUATE:   Evaluate information and its sources critically  

1.         What type and format is this source? Is it an encyclopedia, scholarly journal, or other authoritative material?  

2.         Is the information biased, current, accurate, and provide differing opinions?  

 

D.     USE:  Incorporate selected information into one’s knowledge base

1.         How does this relate to what I already know? Does it make sense? Is  it relevant? 

 

          Use information effectively to accomplish a specific purpose 

1.         Does this information answer your question?

 

E.     LEGAL/ETHICAL : Understand the economic, legal, and social issues surrounding the use of information, and access and use information ethically and legally. (Association of College and Research Libraries, 2011).

1.       Is the information cited appropriately?  Is the work your work and not plagiarized?
